The number of basic social assistance recipients decreased in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area
In April–June, the number of basic social assistance recipients in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area decreased by 4 per cent when comparing the monthly averages to the corresponding period in the previous year. The numbers decreased in Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa. The number of recipients of supplementary and preventive social assistance decreased in Helsinki and Espoo as well.
In April–June, the average monthly number of people receiving basic social assistance was 39,300 in Helsinki, 15,900 in Vantaa and 14,900 in Espoo. The average monthly number of people receiving supplementary or preventive social assistance was 8,500 in Helsinki and 3,100 in Espoo. Some recipients of social assistance received both supplementary and preventive assistance.
Kela took over the granting and payment of basic social assistance from municipalities at the beginning of 2017. Subsequently, the number of recipients of basic social assistance has declined in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. The decline in unemployment explains most of the change in the number of recipients of basic social assistance. Some recipients of social assistance also receive supplementary and/or preventive social assistance from their municipality.
