Migration of foreign nationals

A regional migration gain of nearly 20,000 foreign nationals

In the fourth quarter of 2022, the Helsinki region had a migration gain of 5,030 foreign nationals, which is about 2,300 more than in the previous year. Approximately 40 per cent of the migration gain of foreign nationals in the region is targeted at Helsinki. Espoo’s share was approximately 30 per cent, Vantaa’s 20 per cent, and the share of KUUMA municipalities 10 per cent. Nearly 90 per cent of the migration gain of foreign nationals in the region came from abroad. All the municipalities in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and the KUUMA municipalities combined received migration gains from foreign nationals both from the rest of Finland and from abroad.

In 2022, the Helsinki region had a migration gain of 19,950 foreign nationals, while the rest of Finland had a migration gain of 16,170. In the Helsinki region, the number of foreign nationals moving to the municipality was the highest in Helsinki (7,660 people) and in Espoo (6,210 people). Vantaa had a migration gain of 4,440 people and the Kuuma municipalities 1,600 people. In all regions, as in the rest of Finland, the number of foreign nationals increased by to a record high as a result of migration.

Particularly in the case of migration of foreign nationals, it should be noted that there are uncertainties in the preliminary data, as some of the persons who have moved from the area have not necessarily submitted a notification of move, and thus the move has not been entered in the population register. Statistics Finland removes these cases from population statistics, but with a delay of a few years.
