Greatly reduced air travel in 2020
In 2020, the number of passengers at Helsinki Airport decreased by 77 per cent when compared to the previous year. There were approximately 5 million passengers, when in 2019 there were approximately 22 million. In October–December, the number of passengers dropped by up to 92 per cent. Nonetheless, the number of passengers was slightly higher than the lowest point during the spring.
In 2020, 80 per cent of all flights were international. The most common international destinations were Germany, Sweden, Spain and the United Kingdom. The number of passengers from these countries also decreased considerably compared with the previous year.
Number of airline passengers grew until 2019
The number of airline passengers has been increasing for two decades, although the years 2002, 2009 and 2012 saw downswings in the trend. The year 2020 was exceptional. The number of passengers at Helsinki Airport during the last 12 months was as much as approximately 60 per cent lower than 10 years ago.
