Many new companies were established in the Helsinki region
In the third quarter of 2020, approximately 3,400 new companies were established in the Helsinki region. Despite COVID-19, the number is only approximately 10 per cent lower compared with the number of companies established in the third quarter of the previous year. On a per-sector basis, more new companies were established in trade and business services than in the previous year as well as in the previous quarter.
Overall, the number of new companies has mostly increased at least moderately since the beginning of 2005. In the first three quarters of 2020, as many new companies were established as in all of 2010. Last year saw the second highest number of companies established in the Helsinki region in the third quarter of any year since 2005, second only to the third quarter of 2019.
Many companies were established throughout the country
In August–September, the number of new companies established in the entire country was 9,320. The number of new companies has trended upwards for a long time (more than 15 years) in the Helsinki region as well as all of Finland. The share of manufacturing companies of all new companies is slightly higher in the entire country compared with the Helsinki region and the share of business services companies is respectively lower. However, sector-specific differences are fairly small.
