Number of airline passengers increased in 2022

In 2022, the number of passengers at Helsinki Airport tripled from the previous year. The number of passengers was 12.9 million in 2022. Before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, the number of passengers was nearly 22 million, which means that, despite the increase last year, air travel has not returned to the pre-pandemic level.

In 2022, 81 per cent of all flights were international. The most common international destinations were Germany, Sweden, Spain and France.

Between October and December 2022, the number of passengers increased by 59 per cent compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.

Number of airline passengers had increased for years before the COVID-19 pandemic

Before 2020, the number of airline passengers had been increasing for two decades, although the years 2002, 2009 and 2012 saw downswings in the trend. The years 2020 and 2021 were exceptional. The number of passengers at Helsinki Airport during the last 12 months was as much as 13 per cent lower than 10 years ago.
