The number of people employed in the accommodation and food service sector decreased
In 2020, the number of employees in the Helsinki region decreased the most in the accommodation and food service sector as well as in transportation and storage. The number of employees in the construction and commerce sector is also slightly down from 2019. On the other hand, the number of employees grew in professional, scientific and technical activities as well as the information and communications sectors.
The number of accommodation and food service sector employees continued to decline sharply in the Helsinki region between October and December 2020, compared with the previous year. The number of commerce sector employees was slightly higher than in the previous year. The decrease in the number of people employed in the commerce, accommodation and food service sectors totalled 9 per cent compared with the previous year. Other market services employed 2 per cent fewer people than a year ago. Nonetheless, the number of people employed in the information and communication sector grew. The number of people employed in the construction sector increased by 6 per cent and manufacturing employed 17 per cent more people compared with the previous year.
During the last quarter, the number of employed in the commerce, restaurant and accommodation sectors dropped nationally as much as in the Helsinki region. In the manufacturing sector, growth was slower than in the Helsinki region and in the construction sector the number of people employed remained unchanged compared to the previous year.
Business services are the largest sector
The sector employing the most people in the Helsinki region is business services. A large number of residents in the Helsinki region also work in social and health care services as well as in the trade division. In all of Finland, health care and social services is the largest sector in terms of the number of employees, and the manufacturing division is the second largest.
