Employees by sector

In the Helsinki region, the number of employed persons increased strongly in manufacturing, while the number of employed persons decreased in commerce, accommodation and the restaurant sectors

 In the Helsinki region, the number of employed persons decreased in the commerce, accommodation and restaurant sectors in the fourth quarter of 2022. In total, the number of employed persons in these industries was eight per cent lower than in the previous year.  In the other market service sectors, the number of employees increased by four per cent from the previous year.  Other market services include business services, information and communications, finance, property management, and transport and logistics. In manufacturing, the number of employees increased by as much as 17 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2021. In construction and social services, on the other hand, the number of employees decreased slightly.

At the national level, the number of people employed in manufacturing increased by 11 per cent and in other market services by two per cent in October–December 2022 compared to the previous year. In social services, the number of employees remained at the previous year’s level. In other sectors, the number of employees decreased slightly from the previous year.  

The sector employing the most people in the Helsinki region is business services. A large number of residents in the Helsinki region also work in social and health care services as well as in the commerce sector. In Finland as a whole, the largest sectors are health and social services and manufacturing.
