Number of young unemployed people continues to decrease, albeit more moderately
The analysis is based on the situation at the end of December, the chart is updated monthly
At the end of December, there were 6,200 unemployed persons under the age of 25 in the Helsinki region, which is 18 per cent less than in the previous year. Compared with the previous year, the number of unemployed young people grew by 19 per cent in Helsinki and by 21 per cent in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. In KUUMA municipalities, the number decreased by only five per cent, and in the whole country, about 10 per cent from the previous year.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused unemployment and lay-offs to increase especially among young people who work in the service and sales sectors. The number of unemployed young people doubled quickly in one year. The youth unemployment situation was at its worst in April–May 2020. Following the recovery from the pandemic, unemployment among young people by age group has decreased rapidly over the last couple of years. Regionally, the financial impact of the COVID-19 crisis was particularly strong on young people in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. At the end of 2022, there were still nearly six per cent more young unemployed persons in the Helsinki region than before the COVID-19 pandemic at the end of 2019.
At the end of December, there were nearly 2,400 unemployed young people in Helsinki, 1,000 in Espoo, a little less than 1,300 in Vantaa and nearly 1,600 in the KUUMA municipalities. A total of 28,100 people under the age of 25 were unemployed in all of Finland.
