Migration between the region and other parts of Finland

Migration gain for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, migration loss for KUUMA municipalities

In the last quarter of 2022, the Helsinki region had a migration gain of 880 people from other parts of Finland . This was higher than in the corresponding period of the previous two years, but clearly lower than before the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared to the years before the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a clear difference in emigration from the region. Helsinki received the majority of the migration gain in the region, 800 persons. Espoo’s share was a little under 300 people and Vantaa’s 80 people. The population of KUUMA municipalities decreased by 290 people as a result of domestic migration to other Finnish municipalities.

The total domestic migration gain to the Helsinki region in 2022 was approximately 1,260 people. The majority of the migration gain, approximately 2,800 persons, was targeted at Helsinki. Espoo also received a clear migration gain (about 500 people), but Vantaa’s migration gain remained at just over 100 people. KUUMA municipalities experienced a migration loss of 2,100 people to other Finnish municipalities outside the region. Although the migration between the Helsinki region and other parts of Finland appears to have recovered from the exceptional situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the migration gain for the region is still clearly lower than in the years before 2020, when the region received an annual migration gain of up to 8,000 people. The trend pervades all areas; in 2022, cities in the capital region received less migration gain from the rest of Finland, while the KUUMA municipalities lost more of their residents to the rest of Finland.

It is noteworthy that the migration gain of the Helsinki region from the rest of Finland in 2022 was based on the migration of foreign nationals. The migration gain from foreign nationals was nearly 2,900 people, while the migration loss from Finnish citizens was 1,600 people. Helsinki was the only area with migration gain from other parts of Finland for both Finnish and foreign nationals. The migration loss of the KUUMA municipalities consisted only of Finnish citizens.
