The proportion of unemployed in the labour force

The number of unemployed persons decreased, but it is still higher than before the COVID-19 pandemic

According to the client register of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, the percentage of the unemployed in the labour force in the Helsinki region was 9.7 per cent at the end of December. This is 0.8 percentage points lower than a year ago. In Finland as a whole, the share of unemployed in the labour force was 9.9 per cent.

In December 2022, the Helsinki region had a total of nearly 77,300 unemployed jobseekers, of whom nearly 4,900 were laid off full-time. The share of full-time laid-off employees among all unemployed jobseekers increased to six per cent. The number of unemployed jobseekers decreased by seven per cent from the previous year. The number of full-time laid-off employees decreased by over 2,100 persons year-on-year, but it was higher than in the previous months in 2022. There were still nearly 12,000 more unemployed jobseekers in the Helsinki region than before the COVID-19 pandemic in December 2019. In Finland as a whole, the number of unemployed jobseekers was five per cent lower than one year ago.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, the unemployment rate was 10.4 per cent in Helsinki, 8.7 per cent in Espoo, 11 per cent in Vantaa and 8.1 per cent in the KUUMA municipalities at the end of 2022.

The monthly rate of unemployment is based on the register compiled by Employment and Economic Development Offices, and the total number of employees in the labour force is based on the latest information in the register-based employment statistics of Statistics Finland (at the moment, since the end of 2020). Unemployed jobseekers include the unemployed and employees who are laid off full-time.
