Employees by employer group

In the Helsinki region, the number of employed persons grew modestly in both the private and public sectors

In the Helsinki region, the number of employees in the private sector increased by 0.8 per cent in October–December 2022 from the corresponding period in the previous year. The growth in per cent was the same for the number of employees in the public sector. In the public sector, the number of municipal workers decreased compared to the previous year, whereas the number of people employed by the state increased.

The total number of employed people in the Helsinki region was only 0.4 per cent higher than in the previous year. According to the Labour Force Survey by Statistics Finland, 605,600 people were employed in the private sector and 185,700 in the public sector in the Helsinki region in the fourth quarter of 2022.

At the national level, the number of employees increased by 1.6 per cent for the private sector and by 2.5 per cent for the public sector. The number of people employed by the state increased by eight per cent and the number of municipal workers by almost one per cent. In total, the number of employed persons in Finland grew by 1.7 per cent compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.

Please note! A new employer sector classification was introduced in the Labour Force Survey as of 1 January 2020 based on the Classification of Sectors 2012. The employer sector information from 2020 is not fully comparable with previous years. In the new classification, enterprises owned by a municipality or a joint authority are listed as private sector, whereas they were previously considered part of the public sector. The change will decrease the number of people employed by the public sector while increasing the number of private-sector workers.
